CHESTERFIELD PUBS: The Unicorn to The Yellow Lion

RED PUBS are now closed.
GREEN PUBS have undergone a change of name but are still open.
BLUE PUBS are open.

UNICORN TAVERN, The; 1 Furnace Hill, Chesterfield.
Previously "The Furnace".

UNION, The; Saltergate, Chesterfield.

VICAR LANE VAULTS; Vicar Lane, Chesterfield.
As listed in the 1921 Chesterfield Yearbook. The 1881 census has a "Vicar Lane Wine & Spirit Vaults."

VICTORIA, The; 14 Shaw Street, Whittington Moor.

VICTORIA HOTEL, The; King Street, Brimington.

VICTORIA HOTEL, The; Holywell Street, Chesterfield. Closed 1937.
Built from the remains of The Hospital Inn and The Woolpack.

VICTORIA INN, The; 21-23 Victoria Street, West Brampton.

VICTORIA INN, The; Lowgates, Staveley.

VOLUNTEER INN, The; Holywell Street, Chesterfield.

Previously "The Alma Inn". Premises now occupied by an estate agent's, and seen above in an earlier manifestation as Lloyd Manley Insurance. The Punch Bowl's gaudy exterior creeps in to the right of the photo above, while the place next door on the left was once the "Royal Hygenic Bakery," I believe; somewhere where you could get a late-night cob of indeterminate quality. Handily, the stomach pumps of the Royal Hospital's casualty department were only fifty yards or so further up the road. The alleyway where the guy in the suit stands is one of the many fine toilet facilities provided for the comfort and convenience of late-night revellers, although it must be said that there is nowhere to hang the toilet paper.

WARREN, The; Manor Road, Brimington.
Most recently "The Prince of Wales"

WALTON HOTEL, The; 59 St Augustine's Road, Chesterfield.
An estate pub that, in keeping with the modern fashion, seems to change hands on an almost daily basis.

WELBECK INN, The; 18-20 Soresby Street, Chesterfield.
Previously "Dyson's Vaults."

WELLINGTON HOTEL, The; 29 Spencer Street, Chesterfield.
A small backstreet gem.

WELLINGTON INN, The; 162 High Street, New Whittington.

(ORIGINAL) WHEATSHEAF, The; Packer's Row, Chesterfield.
1881 census offers an address of 2, Wheatsheaf Yard (Church Lane).

WHEATSHEAF, The; High Street, Chesterfield.
Stood just west of TP Wood's wine merchants. The site is now occupied by Littlewoods store.

WHEATSHEAF, The; 74 Newbold Village, Newbold.
Opened in 1966 just behind its predecessor below.

WHEATSHEAF, The; Newbold Village, Newbold
Closed and demolished in 1965 for road widening, this pub was originally the Newbold Church School.

WHITE HART, The; Glumangate, Chesterfield.
A previous name of the Cavendish Hotel

WHITE HART, The; Matlock Road, Walton. Closed c2000.
Quickly became derelict and was finished off by the obligatory mysterious fire.

WHITE HORSE INN, The; West Bars, Chesterfield.
Disappeared under the Portland Hotel.

WHITE HORSE INN, The; High Street, Old Whittington.

WHITE LION, The; Glumangate, Chesterfield.
A previous name of the Cavendish Hotel

WHITE SWAN, The; St Mary's Gate, Chesterfield.

Became "The Avenue" - closed during 2002 and reopened as The White Swan. Became the "Chinese @ The Spire" Chinese restaurant in February 2004. From Mucky Duck to Crispy Duck…

WHITECOTES, The; Boythorpe Road, Chesterfield.

WHITE'S BAR; High Street, Chesterfield.
Formerly High Street Vaults/JB White & Sons Vaults. Now Strand's Cards. Access maintained to The Golden Fleece via a side passage with a pleasant terrace area.

WINSICK ARMS, The; Mansfield Road, Hasland.

WOODSIDE INN, The; 343 Ashgate Road, Ashgate.

WOOLPACK, The; Holywell Street, Chesterfield.
Previously "the Bay Horse." The Victoria Hotel was built on this site in 1888.

YATES'S WINE LODGE; 29-31 Burlington Street, Chesterfield.
Formerly the "Poundstretcher" store & H Samuel's jewellers.

YELLOW LION, The; Saltergate, Chesterfield.
Renamed "Local Heroes" following Chesterfield FC's run to the FA Cup semi-finals in 1997. 2004 saw a refurb and a return to its old name when the Spireites lapsed back to being crap again.
